Yorke Valley seniors results
The Yorke Valley Amateur Basketball
Association started well for many people,
including my secret mate "Courtside" who
tipped all four A grade games correctly.
Arthurton proved too strong for Moonta in
the A women, putting in a good performance,
particularly in defence.
Adele Keleher was a welcome return for
Moonta but Arthurton's length and accurate
shooting caused its opposition problems all
Losing Hayley Spaans normally means los-
ing a tall centre, but Arthurton has replaced
her with Fiona Bussenschutt who will make
an impact around the ring.
Bears had a less-than-convincing win
against Kadina in the closest A grade match of
Lauren Elsworthy showed she is ready to
take the next step and become a true focal
point of the Bear's offence, scoring more than
a third of her side's points, but will need help
Kadina was forced into tough shots and
struggled at times; however, their defence was
much better than last season.
In the A grade men, Arthurton enjoyed a
comfortable win against Moonta, which was
without a couple of players.
Despite losing some experience this season,
Arthurton maintained a controlled and
impressive half-court offence.
The extra youthfulness of the side should
also improve its fast break as well as its transi-
Kadina had a big win against the Bear Cubs
led by last year's co-runner-up association
best and fairest, Ashley Bruce.
The Bear Cubs' first game was more
impressive than any of their matches last year
and the team should only improve.
Most of the Bear Cubs are under 19 players
and could run out of puff by the end of match-
es, but they should be competitive.
Speaking of the u19s, one Kadina team has
dropped out; the two Kadina sides were sup-
posed to play each other so it worked out fine
for this week but the schedule will have to b
adjusted. Tips: "Courtside"
Bears v Arthurton
The grand final rematch is always keenly
awaited by the previous season's runners-up
and Arthurton could send a message by
defeating the reigning premiers. It is the first
game of 2012-13 for Bears and it will be inter-
esting to see if their side is any different.
Arthurton was good against Moonta but
Bears will be looking to come out swinging.
At the final siren... Bears.
Moonta v Kadina
Kadina continues to ease into its season fac-
ing the Bear Cubs and now Moonta. If any-
thing this game should give an early indication
of which side will miss out on the top four. But
don't be mistaken, all five teams this season are
full of quality players and no group can afford
to take a night off. Kadina shouldn't lose con-
centration this early in the piece.
At the final siren... Kadina.
Moonta v Kadina
Kadina was the more impressive of these
sides last Friday so it will be interesting to see
how they compare. A couple of key inclusions
for Arthurton gave them a fearsome line-up
against Moonta and the result was to be
expected. Kadina's effort against the Bears was
a testament to the team's development but it
needs to back it up this week.
At the final siren... Moonta.
Arthurton v Bute
This is our first look at Bute so we will see
whether the girls have really lost those key
players we have been hearing about. If they
have been bluffing, this should be a great
game, but I fear Bute has regressed during the
winter, at least on paper. On the court, Bute
will have to find open players and knock
down their shots to stay with Arthurton,
which looked great in its opening game.
At the final siren... Arthurton.
"Full Court Press"
YVABA UNDER 19 WOMEN... Louise Philbey makes a break down the court. YVABA A GRADE WOMEN... Bears player Erin Scott shoots over the hands of
Kadina's Kim Gericke.
YVABA UNDER 19 MEN... Nathaniel Snodgrass turns to look for an option under
pressure from Moonta's Scott Campbell.
YVABA A GRADE WOMEN... Bears' Georgie Garrard and Kadina's Kara Gunning poised for the
jump ball by umpire Chris Hill in their first game of the 2012-13 season.
